As you all know, I am addicted to the Flip Video Camera, as you can see from my everyday growing YouTube Library

The Flip is also a great way to communicate & provide better customer service.

Belvedere Flowers always gets customer requests for us to email them a picture of the flowers they are sending, so they can see what they're getting.

After all, sometimes just a small image on the website is not the best way to see what you are really getting for your money. The pictures are sent to customers by email, & it is a great way for us to show the customer exactly what they are sending that day.

I decided to take it even a step further and start sending short video emails to our customers instead of just a picture. This way you can see the flower design from all sides and get a better idea of what it looks like, along with the size, and description of flowers used in the design.

Here is an example below of a same day flower delivery we made today along with the customers reaction to our flip video email sent to him.

Watch Flip Video

Below is the customers response to my video email-

WOW!!!!

Your dedication to customer service is outstanding and shows proof that there are still companies ot that care about their customers.
The video was wonderfull and the flower selection was elegant and creative. I can see why the folks over at Belvrdere's have recieved so many great reviews. Not only do i plan on using you guy;s again....but telling anyone who needs some beautiful flowers to give you a call..

Thanks again,
Joshua

We also make videos for future brides looking for ideas about centerpieces and bouquets for their special wedding day! Here is a video I made for an out of town bride looking for a sample of a tall reception centerpiece with lemons and yellows. I also added music to this one, which happened to be one of her & her fiances favorite bands, Coldplay, with the song "Yellow".

She was very happy to receive this and it helped us make decisions on what flowers and style of design she was looking for. The final centerpieces for job we are doing next week, will actually be different from the sample shown on video. Stay tuned for that video at the end of this month!

Finally, we are also using the flip video to show clips on our product pages on our website. This again, helps shoppers get more of an idea of what they are purchasing, instead of just having a picture to look at. These product video clips can be found underneath the image on the product detail page. HERE is an example of some product video clips. (NOTE- only a select few designs have video clips, as it will take some time to get them on all designs)

Ok, I thought I would see for myself what all the buzz was about. So, I decided to order roses from one of the larger online flower companies. This company claims to have the best roses picked fresh from the fields and delivered directly to your home.

I purchased two dozen assorted petite roses at $29.99 + $9.99 shipping and a $2.99 handling fee & tax= approx. $45 total.

When I clicked order, it asked me if I would like to add a simple clear vase for an additional $6.99?

That's funny, the picture priced shows the roses already arranged in a clear vase. I thought that was included in the price but I was wrong.

I chose not to get the vase since it cost extra and we have plenty of vases to put the roses in ourselves, since they do not arrange them for you like the website picture shows.

NOTE- Also be prepared to find extra monthly charges on your credit card after ordering from these larger online flower companies. Customers have been getting dinged with an additional $14.95 a month on their credit card bills with a charge from company called eaysaver.com.

For more information on this scam, watch this news video.

Ok, now back to my online flower buying experience...

We ended up with a growers bunch of 24 petite assorted roses wrapped in a sleeve and strapped into an box. The roses were a very low grade quality and did not make a good impression on my wife. They definitely got a bad grade for presentation, again, since the website picture gives you the impression you are buying a professionally arranged vase of roses in water. All we got was a bunch of roses in a box delivered by FedEx driver!

These companies lure in internet shoppers with their great marketing, convenient website, and of course very low prices, however, in the end, you do get what you pay for, and that is a low quality product.

If you only care about getting someone flowers at a very cheap price and don't care about quality, well then maybe these companies are perfect for you. However, if you are looking to make an impression and send your loved ones the quality that they deserve, well then by all means, use your local flower shop ;)

Administrative Professionals (Secretary's) Day

When : Wednesday, April 22, 2009

pencils.jpg

Administrative Professional's Week is celebrated from April 21 - 26, 2009. You can send flowers or plants any day of the week , even though the official day is Wednesday.

National Professional Secretaries Week and National Secretary's Day was created  in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business. His goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his skill and experience in public relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and importance of the job of secretaries. In doing so, he also created the holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.

Today,  the title is changing and evolving. But, the recognition is equally important. There are two new terms in use today. They are "Administrative Professionals" and "Executive Admins". The two names sometimes mean different roles and responsibilities to different companies. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original "Secretary" role.

The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed significantly since 1952, and for the better at that. And in Harry Klemfuss' day, these postions were the realm of women. Today, you find some males in these positions.

The most common ways of recognizing your Administrative Professional(s) today are:

  • Flowers
  • Cards, often with shopping gift certificates
  • Take them to lunch
  • Candies
  • Assorted Gift Baskets

Administrative Professionals Day gifts are by far the most common way of giving recognition to these most imprtant people on your staff. What is the top gift?..... Giving flowers. Maybe, before you  forget, you should order some flowers now.

J Schwanke - The Flower Psychiatrist!

I had the pleasure of meeting J in person at a wedding show in Lansdale PA @ Younger & Son Wholesale Florist on Wednesday March 18th. I have been a huge fan of JTV for years now and have always been inspired by his fabulous floral creations!

Even though he is always telling his audience to just "have fun with flowers" on JTV episodes, for some reason, it would always go in my one ear and out the other.

When I first took a serious interest in the family flower shop over 20 years ago at the age of 17, I always enjoyed making beautiful flower arrangements at the flower shop, yet could care less about the business side of it. Eventually I had to start taking it more serious , since I realized that this is what I would be doing the rest of my life, most likely, since my hard rock band Dead Susan A.K.A. Far From Even was not going to make me any money to survive, being a drummer.

Eventually I was exposed to the ugly side of the flower business. What could be ugly about the flower business, you may ask?

My answer would be, just about everything but the flowers themselves, such as, writing  checks to wholesalers and landlords, insurance, taxes, bank entries & accounting on Quick Books, hiring & dealing with employees, and trying to build our business in an industry that was starting to die slowly but surely. This was at a time that the internet started to become a huge factor, and of course, started the onslaught of DOG's ( Deceptive Order Gatherers) on the world wide web!

As if this wasn't hard enough to deal with, there also was the problem of everybody & their mothers starting to sell flowers, such as supermarkets, gas stations, produce junctions, street corner stands, which watered down the market and gave people other avenues other than florists to purchase their fresh flowers & plants. You get the idea, this made our jobs that much harder to adjust and try and find new ways to compete in this competitive marketplace. None of these things I would call "fun"!

Unfortunately over the years, I have focused way too much on the business side of being a florist, and not enough on the fun, creative design side of the business. "Yuck" as J would say!

Just recently, as you can read in an earlier blog I posted, my 2009 New Year's resolution was to pick up my knife again and focus more on my creative designs. After all, that is why I took an interest in this business in the first place, because I had some artistic talent.

While this was a resolution I sort of committed to for once in my life, I still found that I was still focusing too much on the ugly side of the flower business. The grey hairs were starting to kick in. I found myself being angry & miserable at the same time, most days at the shop, especially now in these tough economical times. The passion was still there and I was always trying new things, and changing with the times, however, I was not having "fun"!

OK, enough of this depressing talk, let's get to the happy ending already!

So I was chatting with J onFacebook & Flowerchat, about 2 days before the show, which I had no idea was happening, and I said, " Hey J, when are you coming to Philadelphia?" I got a reply later that day with him saying, " As a matter of fact, Adam, I will be in Lansdale PA this Wednesday, hope you can make it!" I said, "awesome, I'm there dude!"

I knew I would see some great designs & fabulous flower ideas, but I never imagined I would be getting a lecture & some great personal stories on just "having fun with flowers". We also got the complete history of J Schwanke including how he was born at a flower convention his parents were attending & that he started working at the family flower shop as a kid. he would go to work early in the morning and make all the flower orders that needed to go out that day, then go to school, and then come back and finish after school. We also got some great comic relief about his stubborn old school mom, which I thought was hilarious! he wasnt able to convince his parents to change their old school ways, so he decided to go out on his own and work for lots of other shops along the way. and eventually do his own thing.

Well, most of you know the rest of the story, he now is one of the most recognizable floral experts in the industry, and works for over 15 different companies, and has his own show called JTV now shown on Ubloom, and also tours the country teaching people "how to have fun with flowers the J way!"

To me , the best part of the show, was J telling us in attendance to put the check books down, hire a high school kid to do the Quick Books entries for minimum wage, and stop making ourselves miserable with the business side and just focus on making ourselves and others happy with beautiful flower creations!

This time, after meeting him in person, he really finally got through to my thick head! Why did it take me so long to realize this?!

I couldn't have gotten this much help from a professional psychiatrist & yet the 2 hour show only cost $25, and that included dinner & peanut butter chocolate brownies & cookies!!!

The last time I was this inspired by someone, was when I was like 11 yrs old and I heard Neil Peart of Rush play the drums for the first time! I still play the drums everyday after work to this day, it helps me release some tension after a long hard days work at the flower shop! I even YouTubed myself playing in my basement about a month ago, you can watch it HERE.

Anyway, getting back to the J show, after it was all over, I was driving home that night, & I realized that I was a changed man instantly, and no longer wanted to be miserable & angry about my job. I realized that I am the luckiest guy in the world to be able to have a job that brings smiles to peoples faces everyday, and there is no reason why I, myself, could smile a little bit more and appreciate what I do. I will never take that for granted again!

I also have an amazing family and a 5 year old son who is also fascinated with flowers and just may be The Future of Belvedere Flowers!

Thank you J, for the inspiration, and for the kind words you said about myself and Belvedere Flowers, during your presentation that night at the wedding show! You truly are a rock star florist and an inspiration to us all in the floral industry!

Feel free to watch some of the video from his awesome presentation HERE!

If you have not seen J in person, I highly recommend you go see him when he comes to a town near you!      Here is a picture of J & myself at the wedding show in Lansdale PA.

In my own humble opinion, what makes Belvedere Flowers website stand out from the rest of the "cookie cutter" websites on the worldwide web is that we show our own pictures, instead of just hiding behind "cookie cutter" wire service images such as Teleflora &  FTD.

We are not afraid to show what we are capable of doing. Our images may not be as professional looking as the wire service images but we believe internet flower buyers want to see the real deal. They are tired of seeing the same photos on thousands of websites, & are looking for something unique & honest!

Here is an example of our own image vs wire service image-

Spring Tulips by Belvedere Flowers

Above photo by Belvedere Flowers- Below photo by Teleflora-

thumb_0_1227457161_86411.jpeg

Anybody can have a "cookie cutter" website with a catalog of pre-loaded photos professionally made by the wire services such as Teleflora, who spend thousands & thousands of dollars on photography to create the "perfect photo". However, you must also know that they are edited with software such as Photoshop to help make them look better. They are also made one-sided to trick the online flower shopper to think there is more flowers in the arrangement.

Here is an example of a Teleflora image below that has been doctored up with software, and its description claims that the arrangement is all-sided , even though the picture shows all flowers in the front-

185118_DX.jpeg

When these flower bouquets are actually made by a floral designer, they need to be seen from all sides, which means the front side that you view in photo online, is not as full looking as the finished actual product made by the florist.

Belvedere Flowers does not use any software to enhance our flower images online. We are the real deal!

How do you know what kind of work a florist is capable of doing if they don't show their own photos? You don't, until you see the product in person. There are a lot of deceptive florists websites on the internet who may show you the prettiest pictures in the world , yet, they cannot create the bouquets that they are showing online.

With all this being said, we still include some wire service images on our website along with our own photos because we still think they are done well, with very creative names & descriptions that can sometimes help sell an image. We just make sure that our photos far outweigh the "cookie cutters" that can be found on thousands of other florists websites across the country.

We continue to get better with photography, and will continue to build our website with our own beautiful designs!

thumb_0_1225985752_cool_water_lavender_roses.jpg

We also just started creating YouTube videos of our store & floral creations, and it also gives online flower buyers a personal inside at our flower shop!

Stay tuned for a special blog on YouTube videos by Belvedere Flowers!

I am very excited to announce that Belvedere Flowers will soon be receiving roses on a weekly basis from Eufloria Flowers. I'm not sure what took me so long to finally try them out, I guess I was content with the usual Ecuadorian roses out of South America, however I am always looking for new avenues & open to try different growers.

After first being inspired by all the fabulous designs by J Schwenke of JTV , which now can be viewed on Ubloom, I then had the pleasure of chatting with Shane AKA Morpheus of Eufloria Flowers, and was just so impressed with the passion he has for their product. It's obvious to me, they are doing things right & I look forward to carrying their roses in my flower shop on a weekly basis. Here is a great quote I took from the bottom of all of Shane's emails that we have sent back & forth...

"Quality is never an accident, it is always the result of high intentions, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillfull execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives...

Here is some more great information that you need to know about Eufloria Flowers-

“At Eufloria, green isn't only our favorite color, it's also the way we grow! Our eco-friendly growing practices include the use of double poly roofs and energy curtains that reduces energy consumption by 33%, natural gas to heat our greenhouses, a water recapturing program to recycle the water and an integrated pest management that greatly reduces the use of pesticides, a process so clean that Eufloria roses can be put on a plate with food! And since Eufloria roses are grown domestically and closer to their market, they go from farm to florist in days, reducing their carbon footprint. Eufloria Flowers, not because it matters to us, because it matters to you!”

A lot more great info below-

Eufloria Flowers is recognized as the premier boutique grower of hydroponic hybrid tea roses of unmatched quality and performance. Eufloria Flowers is not about growing mass quantities of generic roses; it’s about the art and experimentation of optimum growing. With a rich family heritage, a well-entrenched European affiliation, and a care-giving, knowledgeable staff, Eufloria Flowers aspires to cultivate the finest roses available throughout North America. Domestically grown, Eufloria’s farm is located in Nipomo, California, nestled between the Pacific Ocean to the west and mountains to the east in California’s central coast area, an area which provides optimal year-round growing conditions.

Eufloria Roses perform like no others. Since there is so little time between cutting in the greenhouse and arrival at your door, you will find they react differently than other roses to which you may be accustomed. While Eufloria Roses may arrive to you tighter and seem smaller than those you have seen at Eufloria shows or demonstrations, as a living product, they are still growing even after being cut from the plant. When given proper time (a day or two), you will see that Eufloria Roses continue to grow, as they are bred to open to a full robust bloom. Since 1999 Eufloria’s roses have won over 140 ribbons at the prestigious Society of American Florists Outstanding Varieties competition.

PHILOSOPHY

Unlike many growers providing commodity-driven products in mass quantities, Eufloria concentrates its special care and attention on over 80 different hybrid tea roses and 25 spray rose varieties which are individually cared for and cultivated for optimum quality and performance. Eufloria’s growing techniques focus on enhanced characteristics of brilliant coloring, full-bud opening, stem length, longevity, and fragrance. To ensure the finest collection of roses grown in North America, the Eufloria staff visits the top rose breeders of Europe each year (Holland in particular) and selects new varieties based on the ability to meet Eufloria’s meticulous growing practices

GROWING PRACTICES AND METHODS

Eufloria Flowers has a tremendous passion for growing flowers.  One of the main components of Eufloria’s success is using Hydroponics as their growing method. The utilization of this soil-less planting system gives the roses an advantage that cannot be found with field grown roses. Eufloria’s roses are grown in water and a specially treated coconut fiber derived for coconuts grown in Sri Lanka. The coconut fiber has an excellent resilient structure for growing roses which gives the young rose plants an explosive start providing exceptional oxygen and water holding capabilities contributing to Eufloria’s state-of-the-art technology with old world practices.

Eufloria roses are grown in an environment free of harsh pesticides, using instead only mild sprays and an Integrated Pest Management system, where predator bugs are released to control pests that damage the crop – a process so clean that Eufloria roses can safely be placed on a plate with food!

 Care and Handling

Eufloria’s consistent high quality is ensured through specialized care and handling of each rose. Every variety is cut at its specific stage to ensure optimum bloom and performance. The roses are then cradled in the arms of Eufloria’s conscientious employees and each stem is carefully staggered in a cascading fashion from shortest to longest. This ensures that the blooms are not damaged by the thorns. Immediately after being cut the roses are placed in a hydrating solution and then stored in a holding cooler at 36 degrees for 6-24 hours. This cooling down process allows for the stems to become fully hydrated which increases performance. Once the roses are cooled, Eufloria Flowers utilizes a 100% hand-grading system. Each stem is analyzed for proper coloring and any imperfections. This makes for a very consistent bunch of roses. Only the highest grade of Eufloria roses are shipped out of the nursery! Roses are then placed in Chrysal’s Professional #2 solution. Eufloria uses a distinct Inventory Control System consisting of a bar code and varietal name, customers can be assured of the freshness of the roses and that they receive the specific variety they have requested.

Roses are then pulled for each order and packed to the customer’s specifications. Within hours your order is on its way!

Conclusion

Consistently among the most beautiful roses in the world, Eufloria’s roses have been enjoyed by millions of people over recent years at the Kentucky Derby, The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, prestigious political inaugurations, celebrity special events, various television documentaries, movies, and several of John Henry’s special edition collections. Eufloria Flowers takes great pride in being requested by name for both world renowned events and everyday special occasions.

Eufloria, through the careful selection of varietal roses, their unique soil-less growing system, an integrated pest management system, and the highly specialized care and handling of Eufloria’s professional staff, ensures that you will receive the freshest, most beautiful, domestically grown roses available.

Eufloria… the brand that signifies beautiful roses at guaranteed quality, invites you to “Experience Divine Craftsmanship” at its finest!
